Ştei

Ştei was founded in 1952 after the discovery of the world's largest surface uranium deposit in the area. The town boasts a functional urban design, structured as a 'garden city' with a meticulous rectangular street grid and lush vegetation.

For the first ten years, the area was militarised. After the Second World War, Romania was under Soviet occupation until 1958, which led to the export of all uranium to the Soviet Union. The mine continued to operate until 1960.

From 1958 to 1996, the town was named after Dr Petru Groza, Prime Minister of communist Romania (1952-1958).

Today, with a population of 5,400, Ştei is in a phase of new development.
