Milton Keynes
The largest new town in England, built halfway between London and Birmingham and between Oxford and Cambridge. Founded in 1967 for a population of 250,000. Today they aim to reach half a million.
It was built at a time when all planning was subordinated to the car, so it is very reminiscent of cities in the USA. There is a large centre in the middle with low-rise public buildings and plenty of parking space in between, including an indoor ski slope. All around there are diverse neughborhoods with buildings surrounded by a lot of greenery. The main attraction of the town for many years was the very large shopping centre opened in 1979 by the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (pictured here, entrance to the garage).
It is also home to the Red Bull Racing Formula One team, the headquarters of Network Rail, the main owner and operator of Britain's rail network, and many banks, as well as the headquarters of Argos, Domino's Pizza and Marshall Amplifiers.
