Wolfsburg

Founded in 1938 as the Nazi state-sponsored Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben for workers in the production of the Kraft durch Freude Wagen (Strenght-through-joy car), later known as the Beetle, the first German car available to the masses - hence the name Volkswagen - the people's car (in the first photo: the factory's power station).

After the Second World War, when the city became part of the British occupation zone, the city was named after a nearby castle and the expansion of the city continued, by which time only 10% of the original plan had been realised, with 3,000 dwellings.

Today it has a population of 123,000 inhabitants. It is now one of the largest factories in the world, making Wolfsburg the city with the highest GDP per capita in Germany: 182,000 euros. Close to the plant is the Autostadt, one of the largest theme parks in Europe, entirely dedicated to and financed by Volkswagen (in the third photo).

Nearby, Zaha Hadid designed the Phaeno Interactive Science Centre in 2005 (in the last photo).
