Halle-Neustadt

"Chemical Workers City"

Founded in 1976 for the workers and engineers of the country’s largest chemical industry: Buna Schkopau in Leuna. In the beginning, the city did not even have street names, in the spirit of engineering mathematics, each building had a three-digit number, calculated according to the distance from the main street.
Block 10 is the largest block of flats built in the GDR: 380 metres long and designed to house 3,000 people.
There are many sculptures and murals throughout Halle-Neustadt. This was a part of “Kunst am Bau” (art on the building), a state funded program for promoting public art.
