Eda center
A monument to a failed transition
The Eda Centre is the first large commercial building in the town centre to be built in the new millennium and is a significant landmark. This building created a square around the Ikarus monument, with wide steps suitable for sitting as well as hosting events. The tower is named after Rusjan's Eda aeroplane, and a model of it can be seen in the building’s lobby.
Unfortunately, the Eda Centre was also marked by misfortune. Although ambitiously planned as a business hub for the wider region during the "good times," it suffered a severe financial shock with the onset of the 2008 recession, even before it was complete. The crisis caused the planned construction schedule to drag on indefinitely, leaving investors and potential tenants in limbo. To many locals, the tower symbolises failed transition, irresponsibility, and the greed of the new domestic elites of the post-independence era. In its own way, the Eda Centre is therefore a unique Icarus as well.
