SNG – Slovenian National Theatre
The first semi-professional theatre in the town was established in 1955 and became professional in 1969 under the name Drama Theatre of the Primorska Region. The theatre was housed in the main Solkan square until the construction of the magnificent new building. In 2004, it acquired the status of the Slovenian National Theatre, becoming one of only four such institutions in the country (alongside the Drama, Opera, and Ballet Theatre in Ljubljana, and the Maribor SNG with drama, opera, and ballet). Sergij Pelhan (1939), the theatre’s long-time director and former Minister of Culture, deserves the greatest credit for both the building and the national status.
Over the years, many renowned figures in Slovenian theatre have been part of the ensemble, including Ivo Barišič, Radoš Bolčina, Bine Matoh, Janez Starina, Iztok Mlakar, Janez Škof, Peter Musevski, Marjuta Slamič, and Ana Facchini, among others.
