Monument to the Builders of Nova Gorica
The last major public commission by the sculptor Zmago Posega is the Monument to the Builders of Nova Gorica, installed in September 2008 on Bevk Square as a tribute to all those who, through voluntary work after the Second World War, began building the new town. The sculptor placed three bronze compositions, each about half a metre high, on stone plinths. Each tells its own story—depicting the lives of volunteers at the construction site, who built Nova Gorica with pickaxes, shovels and wooden wheelbarrows.
In 2013, during the renovation of Bevk Square, the monument was relocated to an unsuitable site near the Vrtnica inn, against the rear wall of the municipal building, in front of rough stone and iron window grilles, which was not in line with the sculptor’s vision. The work had originally been conceived for an open setting with a natural, tree-lined backdrop.
Editorial note: the monument was later relocated again and today stands in a more appropriate, natural setting.
